The Pendower Beach Hotel - the Pink Hotel - has for many years been part of the landscape of Pendower and Carne beach, but three years ago it was sold and has been empty ever since. The new owners have put forward two possible schemes for its redevelopment. The first was withdrawn. The current scheme seeks to be more environmentally friendly but would dominate the valley with a co-ownership development of chalets extending far beyond the existing hotel's footprint.
The friends would like to see the hotel brought back to life but want any redevelopment to remain within the existing built footprint of the hotel. Pendower is an area of outstanding natural beauty and if it were to be overdeveloped the beauty would be lost forever.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
Here are some points you might raise with the Cornwall Council Planning Department in Truro.
* The only local consultation on this proposal has been arranged by the developers. So far, there has been no feedback on the comments that were requested at these consultations
* The only reason why the new proposed development goes beyond the footprint of the existing hotel appears to be profit
* 'Co-ownership chalets' would not bring as much local employment as a new hotel
* A development beyond the footprint of the existing hotel is likely to affect the wildlife and geology of the valley and the beach
* Any increase in the scale of human habitation at sea level on a site like this must raise serious questions about sewage management.
*It is hard to see how the narrow approach roads could safely handle an increase in traffic.
